Student from CCA awarded the 2022 “For Our Future” scholarship

Lettie receives the award from Mr Lau Ming-wai, Founder and Director of MWYO (Youth-Oriented Think Tank) and one of the scholarship panel judges.

Congratulations to Lettie Lo Chi-hoi of the Master of Arts in Music Education (MAME) programme at the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) for being awarded the 2022 “For Our Future” scholarship. She stood out from some 200 participants and was among the 16 awardees from 13 tertiary educational institutions. Each awardee will receive a scholarship of HK$50,000 to support their academic studies and future development. Lettie received her award in person at the presentation ceremony held at YO PLACE on 4 May 2022.

The scholarship was established by the Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation to recognise local students who perform excellently in their academic studies, show diverse development and are involved in community services. Award recipients are also expected to have a strong commitment to Hong Kong and a desire to continue serving society after graduation.

“Music has brought me immense joy,” Lettie said. “It is not just about knowledge and technique, but also about facilitating the holistic development of individuals. Being a music performer and educator helps to build my inner strength, courage and resilience. Hence, I have devoted myself to music education and assisting the new generation in embarking on their own musical journey.”

Lettie said the one-year programme strengthened her knowledge and technical skills in music performance, appreciation and research. She expressed her gratitude for the support and opportunities offered to her by the University. “I am particularly grateful for the professors at CCA who inspired me to share the joy of music and to spread positivity through musical performances,” she said.

Lettie performs with fellow classmates of the MAME programme during a Christmas event at a primary school in Hong Kong.

Lettie plays as a young fox cub in a production of Leoš Janáček’s opera, The Cunning Little Vixen.

Apart from studying, Lettie has participated in many social services over the years. She was a volunteer teacher at local primary schools, where she helped students learn the English language through music and games. She also took part in fundraising activities to raise public awareness of mental health and wellbeing, such as Christmas carol singing in the UK, and the Black Dog Project organised by the University of Bristol.

Lettie’s remarkable performance in arts and culture won her the President’s Appreciation Award in the President’s Commendation Scheme for the academic year 2021/22. She also won first place in the vocal category within the 16-or-above age group in the “International Youth Stars of Tomorrow Competition 2021”.

Besides Lettie, Carlos Chow Yin-hong of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) programme from the Faculty of Humanity was also an EdUHK awardee of the 2022 “For Our Future” scholarship.

The “For Our Future” scholarship panel judges include Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan, Convenor of Hong Kong’s Executive Council (2017 to 2022); Mr Tommy Yuen, Commissioner for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area; Professor Wong Yuk-shan, Chairman of the Research Grants Council; Mr Lau Ming-wai, Founder and Director of MWYO (Youth-Oriented Think Tank); and Mr Daryl Ng, Chairman of the Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation.
